Key Lime Pie for the Woman on the Run!

I must credit my husband for finding this quick, easy, and delicious key lime pie recipe. Little did he know that it was the "1999 American Pie Council 's National Pie Championship's first place winner in the Quick and Easy Category."

Believe me, if I can make it, YOU can make it.

Ingredients
5 egg yolks, beaten
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1/2 cup key lime juice
1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crust

Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Combine the egg yolks, sweetened condensed milk and lime juice. Mix well. Pour into unbaked graham cracker shell.
Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Allow to cool. Top with whipped topping and garnish with lime slices if desired.
***Note: especially delicious with homemade whipped cream. Just add sugar to heavy whipping cream, whip the crap out of it, put it in a magic bullet, or whatever, and you'll have yourself a delicious topping in no time!

Happy baking! ...even happpier eating!

Project Badass

Badasses of the Past, Present, and... Future?

In my opinion, there are a plethora of people who are confident, interesting, and worth knowing about. However, over time, there are only a few true badasses, and only a small amount of people who will become true badasses themselves.

Definition: A badass: 1. adjective. Pertaining to a person who knows who they are, isn't afraid to show it, and frequently displays their personality physically with wild hair, outrageous make-up, and unbelievably good clothes. They don't care what others think and are completely fearless. 2. noun. Someone who is perceived to have the qualities of definition 1: aka someone who isn't afraid to yell into the microphone, wear sunglasses at night, or rock a hot pink skin tight bodysuit. 3. noun. Some THING that is perceived to be ridiculously unique or irreplaceable: such as Mexican food, vespas, or brightly colored clothing.

Examples: "Badass" in a sentence:
1. I have the most badass hot pink vespa with bitchin' tires.
2. This chimichanga is completely badass.
3. My dad is one badass m*tha' f&%ka'.

For now, I'm just going to start with badasses of the past, because once I started this project badass, I realized it takes a while. And what kind of badass has time to sit on the couch and blog all day??? (NOT A ONE!

BADASSES OF THE PAST

Edie Sedgwick (April 20, 1943 – November 16, 1971)
My mother gave me a picture when I was about 13 years old, living as (what I thought of myself:) a daring teenager with a fierce "you can't tell me what to do" attitude, who was actually a completely clueless teenager with an unnecessary attitude. However, she gave this picture of me because the girl in the picture reminded her of me: the girl was Edie Sedgwick. For years I had no idea what the background of the picture was, but I eventually learned about it and about the girl in the picture. I often looked at the picture and because it reminded my mother of me, it also reminded me of myself, and I felt it necessary to discover who this girl was and what her life was all about. Eventually, after some research, I realized: she was a complete and utter badass.

Edie Sedgwich was an actress, model, and heiress, who is known for her relationship with Andy Warhol (another total badass). In her short life she accomplished quite a bit, and appeared in many of Warhol's short underground films of the 60's. She has a strikingly beautiful look, much like Audrey Hepburn, with a little bit of grunge and "bad girl" look emanating through her soft appearance. Back in the 60's, Edie left home to find herself in New York, and try a life on her own to make it big, make it to hollywood. I think anyone with dreams like that who actually attempts to achieve them, has huge guts, especially during a time when women were encouraged to stay at home and play the more typical womanly roles of the house. Edie unfortunately got into heavy drugs which eventually lead to her demise, but hey, she followed her goals and really lived, right? Isn't that what's most important?

Learn about her, it will be worth it:

By the way, the picture my mom gave me appears as my blog profile picture.

If you don't agree, you're not badass potential.

Rocky Balboa, All 5 movies, and, really, Sylvester Stallone
Because when you google "badass," this is who should come up. We should all want to be that cool.

New Kids on the Block (NKOTB)
For obvious reasons.
But, their new stuff stinks, so that's why they are in the "PAST" category.

More to come, this is taking too long.

Never stop learning.

I saw a quote the other day about love and the meaning of life. As quotes usually do, I became inspired to start to live each day trying to learn something new and better myself. I keep telling myself that I will eventually "get around to" things that I mean to do. Today, I'm going to start to live by: learning to knit.

I thought this would come naturally, and naturally, it hasn't. It is challenging, but I know that like golf, tennis, and other more senior activities, this will be something I will take with me for years to come.

Hopefully someday I'll knit socks for my grandchildren. Now, to start, a potholder.

Happy knitting.
J.D. Salinger, The Life and Work of a Reclusive, True Artist

"I love to write and I assure you I write regularly," Salinger said in a brief interview with the Baton Rouge (La.) Advocate in 1980. "But I write for myself, for my own pleasure. And I want to be left alone to do it."

Today we mourn the loss of a reclusive, brilliant, and interesting legend, J.D. Salinger. I have, for years, been inspired by the work of J.D. Salinger, in particular The Cather in the Rye.

It is by far the most inspiring book I have ever read. Inspiring in the way that no other auther could have a character narrate a book with such realism. As you are reading, it as if you are getting to know Holden Caulfield, and can understand why he does the things he does. You begin to get to know him and think of him as an actual person narrating his own story; as if it is non-fiction and he is telling you about his adolescence, trials, tribulations, and everyday struggles:

"If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth." The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield in Chapter 1, opening words of book

His demeanor and delivery is in such a funny way, that you will laugh out loud reading. Seriously.

J.D. Salinger created such a real character that he has continued to inspire people of all ages, and even horrify others. However, if the character of Holden Caulfield horrifies you, I encourage you to take a step back and loosen up. Teenagers rebel, get over it.

If you know nothing about J.D. Salinger, it's not too late. He, like many others, chose to stay out of the limelight and live in solitary. How nice, right? Learn about him, read his work, it won't be a waste of time.

"I was half in love with her by the time we sat down. That's the thing about girls. Every time they do something pretty, even if they're not much to look at, or even if they're sort of stupid, you fall half in love with them, and then you never know where the hell you are. Girls. Jesus Christ. They can drive you crazy. They really can." ~J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye, Chapter 10
